Everything You Need to Know About Disabling Startup Programs on Windows. Programs that automatically start with Windows can slow down your computer’s boot time, making you wait to get a useful desktop while icon after icon loads into your system tray. Fortunately, it’s possible to prevent these programs from automatically starting. Some of these programs perform a useful function, but many autostart programs are unnecessary and do little more than slow down your boot time — particularly programs that may have been preinstalled by your computer’s manufacturer. Why You Should Disable Startup Programs. When your computer starts — or, more accurately, when you log into your computer — Windows loads your desktop and all the system processes it requires. Windows also loads programs that are configured to automatically start with Windows. These could be chat programs, file- downloading applications, security tools, hardware utilities, or many other types of programs. How to kill unwanted processes and applications that slow down. Remove Programs Running in the Background. One of the easiest ways to boost performance is to remove background programs. This will award you with boost. Conserve Windows Phone battery life. If they’re running in the background and you don’t see them consuming much memory, battery, or network resources, they’re safe to leave alone. On a typical Windows computer, you’ll likely find quite a few programs automatically starting with Windows. Windows hides most of these programs in the system tray beneath an arrow by default. Stop Windows 8 Apps from Running in Background. This helps unclutter your taskbar, but it doesn’t help speed up your boot times. Every startup program your computer loads increases the time you must wait for a usable Windows desktop. Small programs may load very quickly, but heavier programs generally take longer to load. Multiply this by the many different programs set to automatically start with Windows on a typical PC and you’ll see significant increases in boot time. Several years ago, studies found that startup programs installed by a Windows computer’s manufacturer could increase a typical Windows computer’s boot time by as much as two minutes. Startup programs also occupy memory and use other system resources, although their presence will typically be felt mostly through longer boot times. Worse yet, these programs are often not important, so you’re getting a longer boot time for no real advantages. Why Programs Automatically Start. Most Windows computers include quite a few programs set to automatically start out- of- the- box. Other programs you install afterwards may also set themselves to automatically start. Most of these programs will appear in your system tray, but some may not and may run hidden in the background. Programs automatically start for a variety of reasons: To stay connected: Programs like Skype and other instant messaging solutions automatically start up by default, keeping you signed in so you can be contacted by other users. To download and upload: Steam automatically starts to download the latest updates for your PC games in the background, while u. Torrent and other file- downloading programs automatically start so they can continue your active downloads. To stay running: Programs like Dropbox, Google Drive, and Sky. Drive start up with Windows so they’re always running, downloading and uploading your files. Other programs, like your antivirus program, automatically start for the same reason — so they’ll always be running in the background. To control your hardware: Hardware utilities often automatically start to monitor your hardware and provide quick access to settings. Some programs may just automatically start to preload themselves so they’ll open more quickly when you need them. Other programs may place themselves in the system tray exclusively to give you quick access to certain settings. In many cases, you may not want these programs to automatically start with Windows. How to Disable Startup Programs. You can often prevent a program from automatically starting in its preferences window. For example, common programs like u. Torrent, Skype, and Steam allow you to disable the autostart feature in their options windows. However, many programs don’t allow you to easily prevent them from automatically starting with Windows. How you should disable such startup programs depends on the version of Windows you’re using. If you use Windows 7 or earlier, you can use built- in MSConfig tool to disable startup programs, but we recommend you download the free CCleaner and use its built- in Startup Manager — you’ll find it under the Tools section in CCleaner. If you’re using Windows 8, you’ll find a new startup manager in the Windows Task Manager. This tool also informs you how long each program takes to start when you log in, showing you which programs are really slowing down your boot time. Which Startup Programs Should You Disable? With the nuts and bolts out of the way, all that’s left is deciding which programs are important and which you’ll want to disable. First, use a bit of common sense to understand what each program may be doing. For example, u. Torrent is clearly starting so it can continue downloading files, while Skype is starting so it can keep you logged in in the background. Some autostart programs may have names you don’t recognize — they may have been included with your computer or a hardware driver and not be related to software programs you use. For more information, you can perform a web search for the name of the program and see what other people are saying. This will give you more information about the program, letting you know whether or not it’s useful. With Windows 8’s task manager, you can right- click an autostart entry and select Search online to quickly perform a web search for it. What About System Services? Some Windows software — both software included with Windows and some software added by programs you install — run as low- level system services. For example, Adobe Flash installs an updater service that will automatically check for updates in the background. However, we don’t recommend messing with these — most programs won’t install services and the ones that do generally need the services for their operation. You won’t see much improvement in boot times or memory use from messing with your computer’s services, although you could cause problems if you disable the wrong services. We recommend leaving system services alone. Some programs also install useless browser toolbars, add- ons, and other junk. These won’t make your computer take longer to startup, but they automatically start with your browser and can make your browser take longer to start up. Such junk software can be removed from within your browser’s options window or by uninstalling them from the Windows Control Panel. CCleaner also allows you to disable such software using its Startup tool.

Hobbies and lead poisoning. Hobbies which involve the use of lead may include. Leadlighting. Making or handling lead sinkers used for fishing. Recreational shooting, including casting bullets and shooting at a pistol range. Young children and lead poisoning. Lead exposure can permanently damage the brain and impair intellectual development. Children under five years of age are especially vulnerable to lead exposure because. They frequently put their hands to their mouths. They absorb and retain more lead from the gut and airways than adults do. Their developing brains are more sensitive to the effects of lead. Unborn babies are also at risk, since lead swallowed by the pregnant mother readily passes through the placenta. Breastfeeding mothers can also pass lead on to their infants via their breastmilk. Symptoms of acute lead poisoning. The symptoms of acute lead poisoning (a high level at one time) include. Muscle pains. Fatigue. Abdominal pains. Headache. Nausea and vomiting. Seizures. Coma. Symptoms of chronic lead poisoning. Chronic (long- term or ongoing) exposure to lower levels of lead may produce symptoms such as. Irritability. Lack of energy Loss of appetite. Learning disabilities. Behavioural problems. Poor school performance. Poor coordination. Impaired growth. Children are particularly at risk during redecorating or renovating, as they may pick up or swallow paint chips or dust. Risk of lead exposure is greater if the lead paint is damaged (for example, flaking or chalking) or chewed by children. Dust – household dust may contain lead from a number of sources, including deteriorating lead- based house paints, contaminated soil or dust brought into the house on feet, clothing or on pets’ paws or fur. Soil – some industrial and mining activities may cause high lead levels in soil, as can lead- based household paints Air pollution – vehicle battery works, iron and steel production, soldering, and copper and lead smelters can produce airborne lead. In early 2. 00. 2, leaded petrol was phased out in Australia. Water – some copper household pipes used to be soldered with lead, which can dissolve into water that may be sitting in these pipes Traditional and alternative medicines– some . Australian standards strictly limit the amount of lead in Australian- made or painted toys. However, some imported toys have presented a risk. Also, very old cots or second- hand painted cots may contain unsafe levels of lead. Food – do not store food in pewter, lead crystal glassware or pottery containing lead- based glazing. Imported cans from specialty stores with irregularly soldered side seams may contain high levels of lead. Legislation restricts lead levels in Australian foods to safe limits. If you or a member of your family believes they have been exposed to lead, visit your doctor for further advice. The national goal for all Australians is to have a blood lead level below 1. Following appropriate safety regulations and practices at work and home if your job or hobby involves the use of lead. Do not bring home lead- contaminated work clothing to wash with the household laundry. Not working with lead in or around your home. Melting, grinding, sanding or swallowing lead is dangerous. Follow safety guidelines if making, using or storing lead fishing sinkers and bullets or projectiles, and consider using non- lead alternatives. Consulting with your water supplier or council environmental health officer if you suspect your drinking water may contain lead. Painting over intact old paint on walls or salvaged doors and windows (don’t disturb the surface) when redecorating or renovating your home to reduce the amount of lead dust. Pregnant or breastfeeding women and children under five should not be present. Cleaning the house regularly and ensuring there is no build- up of dust, wetting dusty floors, ledges, windowsills and other flat surfaces to minimise the risk of lead containing dust getting into the air. Discouraging your toddler from playing in or eating dirt and from putting dirty fingers or toys in their mouth, washing toys and dummies frequently, and washing children’s hands and faces before they eat or nap Ensuring that children do not have access to peeling paint or chewable surfaces painted with lead- based paint, such as windowsills and old cots. Ensuring old toys and furniture have not been painted with lead- based paint. If you can’t be sure, take the safe option and keep them away from children Avoiding storing food in pewter, lead crystal or glazed pottery containers. A: Sometimes it is hard to guarantee if certain plants are hardy enough in certain area. From our experience, tropical plant performance in non- tropical areas depend on many factors; a lot of times plants appear to be hardier than they are believed to be. Other times, an obviously hardy plant doesn't survive winter. So there always will be a chance of risk involved, while nice surprises are not an exception. I guess they sneaked in with the plant from the garden where it was a week ago. I don't want them to spread around and get to the nearby gardenia. What should I do to protect my plants from insects indoors? A: Sometimes bugs attack indoor plants more than those outside in the garden. The main reason is lack of air circulation, lack of sunlight, lack of bug natural predators, and lack of plant's immune resistance due to winter dormancy. So, you need to pay extra attention at your plants health during colder months they spend indoors. Inspect leaves, especially underneath, at least on weekly basis. If noticed first signs of insect attacks (insects and/or leaf damage such as holes, chewed edges, discoloration, dark or sticky coating), use a simple organic remedy that is handy in every house. Mix in a cup of hot water two tablespoons of any cooking oil: Canola, Vegetable, Sunflower, Olive; Neem oil is the best for this purpose, but it does have a pungent odor (bugs don't like it as well as some people). Add a few drops of dish- soap for better mixing oil in the water. You may add a clove of pressed fresh garlic - bugs hate it! Clean leaves with this solution using cloth, paper towel, and/or spray bottle. If insects are persistent or your treatment arrived too late when a plant is excessively infested, after cleaning with the oil solution, you may use additionally systemic insecticide sprays sold in garden centers, with active ingredients of pyrethrin, imidacloprid or similar. Make sure to read product label and follow instructions. However try the organic recipe first, it really works! You may repeat it as needed, as often as you want! See Top. Fall Prevention Training Among Residential Carpenters (Completed - 2. Bradley A. Evanoff, MD, MPH Washington University. St. Louis, MO Ph: (3. Email: bevanoff@im. The percentage is even higher in residential construction, where falls account for nearly half of work- related deaths. For the past five years, Dr. Bradley Evanoff and his research team at Washington University have worked with the Carpenters Joint Apprenticeship Program (CJAP) in St. Louis to reverse this trend, through improved fall prevention training programs for apprentice residential carpenters. Their early research uncovered some stark findings: More than half of surveyed apprentices knew a co- worker who had fallen from a height in the previous year. The most common source of falls was ladders, which were involved in 2. Carpenters think ladders are safe! Dr. Evanoff and the research team began the project by assessing the fall prevention training needs of apprentices through focus groups, worksite audits by retired skilled carpenters, and a survey of more than 1,0. They found that apprentices prefer to learn by doing and like to hear real- world stories from experienced carpenters. The team then worked with the CJAP instructors to revise the curriculum. The new program provided more hands- on practice and group discussion. As part of the new training, appren- tices built sections of a “model home,” rating the tasks from least to most hazardous. Throughout the project, the team also worked closely with leadership from the Carpenters District Council and the Home Builders Association of Greater St. Louis. In 2. 00. 9, the researchers evaluated the revised fall prevention training. They surveyed newly trained apprentices about their safety behaviors, and arranged to have retired skilled carpenters conduct audits at sites where the apprentices worked. In all, nearly 1,0. Key Findings: Apprentices reported feeling more confident in their ability both to perform work tasks at heights and to prevent falls from heights, as a result of the training. Apprentices’ self- reported safe use of ladders increased by about 5. The worksite auditors observed drastic improvements in priority training areas, such as avoiding work on the top plate of the ladder, use of warning lines to alert workers to unprotected edges, and truss setting. The audit data evaluated so far show that apprentices increased their overall compliance with measured safety behaviors from 5. Despite a decrease in the number of active appren- tices due to the downturn in the construction industry, 7. Still, apprentices continue to report barriers to implementing safe behaviors at the worksite, such as the specific work situa- tion, time, and lack of equipment. The work has led to a one- year funded project from the Heartland Center for Occupational Health and Safety to measure the effectiveness of fall prevention technology at residential worksites. Original Project Abstract: Falls are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the construction trades despite considerable knowledge of risk factors and prevention strategies. Though construction apprentices receive training in fall prevention, it is not known how effectively this training changes knowledge, attitudes, and safety behaviors- even when effective, safety behaviors learning in training may not persist at the jobsite. The overall goal of this proposal is to evaluate the effectiveness of fall protection training methods among apprentice carpenters. Our proposal has three specific aims: 1. Conduct a comprehensive needs assessment including a careful assessment of the content and process of the current fall protection training. Develop and implement changes in fall protection training based on the needs assessment. Evaluate the effectiveness of the modified training. The project will follow the conceptual framework described by NIOSH for evaluation of strategies to prevent work injuries, moving through organizational and development phases prior to intervention, collection of outcome measures, analyses, and reporting. We will collect both quantitative and qualitative data to assess the effectiveness of current fall protection training and gaps in current training prior to planning our curricular changes. Baseline and follow- up measures will include three major types of data: questionnaires of apprentices, observations of work behaviors, and focus groups. The primary site of the proposed work will be the St. Louis Carpenters' Joint Apprenticeship Program for Greater St. This four- year training program has 2. Carpenters District Council (CDC) of Greater St. Louis and Vicinity, the nation's largest unionized residential carpenter workforce in a single geographic area. GOSWAMY BRIJ KUMAR JEE. This metric was created to measure subjective blocking effect in video sequence. For example, in contrast areas of the frame blocking is not appreciable, but in smooth areas these edges are conspicuous. This metric also contains heuristic method for detecting objects edges, which are placed to the edge of the block. In this case, metric value is pulled down, allowing to measure blocking more precisely. We use information from previous frames to achieve better accuracy. Source. MSU Blocking Metric. SSIM Index.
